EDUCATOR TELLS INTERNET LISTENERS NAFTA WAS A KEY TO FOX ELECTION

CLAREMONT PROFESSOR WAS ELECTION OBSERVER IN STATE OF MONTEREY

Santa Ana, Ca, July 10, 2000 -- Author and Educator, Professor Aldo Flores, told a global internet talk show audience that NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) was a decided key to Vincente Fox’s election as President of Mexico this past week.

Professor of Political Economy at Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, Ca., Flores was commissioned as an official observer of the election and was stationed in Monterey, Mexico for the event.

"Before NAFTA", Flores said on www.Talk2k.com, "Investors in the Mexican economy were wary and cautious and were staying away from Mexico." With NAFTA’s passage, uncertainty about Mexican policies gradually disappeared as it "became apparent the Mexican people could organize institutions and match the quality output of the other efficient nations Mexico began to deal with, " Flores said.

This new outlook encouraged Mexican citizens to seek positive ways to participate in the globalization of its economy, Flores said. As a result, the 2000 election highlighted many changes the Mexican people had discovered they wanted. When talk show host Kyle Warren asked Flores if Fox was going to be the Mexican people’s Franklin Roosevelt, Flores said President Cardenas had been their Roosevelt and likened this election as

"more like the Republican takeover of the American Congress under Newt Gingrich."

Flores is author of numerous articles about institutional reform and recently published a book about the political economy of Mexican trade liberalization titled in Spanish "La Economía Política de la Protección Comercial En México, 1970-1994."
